The Center for the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Serbia was inaugurated at the Ethnographic Museum in Belgrade on June 20, 2012. The Center has based its activities upon the UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage (2003). The Assembly of the Republic of Serbia ratified the Convention in May 2010.
In a very dynamic period of social and economic changes in the world, local cultures are subjected to disappearance or transformation beyond recognition of original motifs. It is precisely for this reason that the task of the Centre involves research, cataloging, processing, storage and presentation of the intangible cultural heritage in the territory of the Republic of Serbia, but also the assistance to local communities in identification, evaluation, practice, and transfer of their own cultural heritage to future generations. The goal of the Center is better positioning and inclusion of the intangible cultural heritage as an important resource within the project in the field of social and economic development. For the purpose of more effective work on preserving the intangible cultural heritage, the Center conducts training activities and works with other institutions, associations, organizations, and individuals at home and abroad (the Ministry of Culture and Information of the Republic of Serbia, the National Commission for UNESCO at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, scientific and educational institutions, institutions engaged in the protection of cultural heritage, non-governmental organizations, etc.).
The management of the National Registry of the Intangible Cultural Heritage and all the relevant documents in electronic, paper, video, and audio file formats constitute one of the most important activities of the Center for the Intangible Cultural Heritage.
At the moment, the National Inventory of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of the Republic of Serbia contains fifty one (51) element inscribed on the List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage Elements adopted by the National Committee for the Intangible Cultural Heritage.
The National Network of professional bodies and institutions for the safeguarding of the intangible cultural heritage is composed of The National Committee for the Intangible Cultural Heritage, The Center for the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Serbia, The Network of Regional Coordinators and The Commission for Inscription of the Intangible Cultural Heritage in the National Registry.
