ETHNOGRAPHIC AT KALEMEGDAN – A FESTIVAL OF KNOWLEDGE AND TRADITION

As part of the Belgrade Summer festival, the Ethnographic Museum will present its program on Saturday and Sunday, August 2 and 3, 2025, at Kalemegdan, at the Music Pavilion and Ribar's Fountain, from 4 PM to 9 PM. Admission is free.

Within this year’s Belgrade Summer, the Ethnographic Museum is organizing a two-day event at the Kalemegdan Music Pavilion titled Festival of Knowledge and Tradition, intended for all generations. The program is conceived as a celebration of tradition, play, and creativity, aiming to present Serbian traditional culture in a modern, creative, and accessible way.

Visitors can expect workshops for children and adults, exhibitions, a theatre performance, film screenings, and a souvenir shop with unique heritage-inspired items. Participants will have the opportunity to engage in the program, discover old crafts, learn the basics of traditional dances, or try their hand at calligraphy.


Family & Children’s Program

“Learn Kolo with an Accordion Player”
A workshop where small groups learn the basic steps of the traditional Serbian kolo dance with live accordion music and guided instruction. The workshop is adapted for all ages.
Time: 4:00 PM – 5:30 PM and 7:30 PM – 8:00 PM
Registration is required.

Ethno Workshops for Children
Through creative and educational activities, children will explore elements of folk culture—from decorating objects and exploring old crafts to learning about traditional games and customs. The workshops are designed to inspire imagination, curiosity, and learning through play.
Time: 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM

Wool Felting Workshop
An introduction to the traditional technique of wool processing—children will felt wool and make their own ethno keychains to take home as souvenirs. The workshop lasts 1 hour and 15 minutes and is organized in two groups.
Time: 5:00 PM – 7:30 PM

Workshops for Adults – Focus on the Manak House

Botanical Printing
A workshop for printing plants onto fabric using natural dyes and heat. Participants will create unique textile items inspired by nature.
Time: 4:00 PM – 6:30 PM
Registration is required.

Calligraphy Basics
An introduction to calligraphy techniques—from shaping lines and letters to composing complete layouts. With expert guidance, participants will engage in practical writing exercises.
Time: 5:00 PM – 8:00 PM
Registration is required.


Festival Program

Exhibitions
From 4:00 PM to 9:00 PM:

  • Photo Exhibition by the Ethnographic Museum

  • Digital Monograph of Serbian Proverbs, in collaboration with Bakina tajna company

Theatre Performance
From 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM:
Interactive monodrama “King Trojan’s Goat Ears” performed by Milutin Jevđentijević Gigi. This performance has been staged more than 1900 times and offers audiences of all ages a magical tale with forgotten objects and living heritage.

Ethnological Film Screenings
From 8:00 PM to 9:00 PM:
Selected ethnological films from the Ethnographic Museum’s collection will be shown, with a focus on Serbian productions. The screenings also serve as a preview of the 34th International Festival of Ethnological Film, to be held at the Museum from December 4–7, 2025.


Activations

Traditional Ethno Hairstyles
On both days, from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM, visitors will have a chance to explore traditional hairstyles and receive their own ethno-inspired look.

Ethno Badge Making
Saturday: 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM
Sunday: 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM
Participants will design their own badges inspired by traditional motifs.


Museum Souvenir Shop

From 4:00 PM to 9:00 PM
The Ethnographic Museum’s souvenir shop will feature a curated selection of handmade items crafted in the spirit of old trades. Visitors will be able to purchase authentic gifts and objects infused with the spirit of Serbian traditional culture.
