This year marks nine decades since the death of Dr. Sima Trojanović, the founder of the Ethnographic Museum and one of the pioneers of Serbian ethnology.

Educated at European universities, he brought to Serbia modern scientific methods and a breadth of perspective that was remarkable for his time. His wide-ranging interests encompassed anthropology, folk medicine, spiritual culture, beliefs, and the everyday life of the Serbian people.

As the Museum’s first director, he established the foundations for the systematic collection and study of traditional heritage. As early as 1902, he represented Serbia at the exhibition in St. Petersburg, where a gold medal was awarded, and at the 1905 Liège EXPO, the Museum received the Diploma of Honour.

Today, we remember a man whose vision created an institution that has preserved culture, identity, and heritage for more than a century.

Preserving the memory of those who built our institutions is the finest way to honor their work and continue their path.

Over the coming year, as the Ethnographic Museum marks its 125th anniversary, a series of expert panels will be organized, along with the promotion of the Collected Works of Dr. Trojanović—in honor of the great figure who set the standards of Serbian ethnology and museology.
