The capacity-building workshop at the national level “Museums as ICH Safeguarding Agents” will take place from 15 to 17 April 2026 in the Ethnographic Museum in Belgrade, Serbia.

This activity is organised in implementation of the annual work plan of the Regional Centre for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage in South-Eastern Europe under the auspices of UNESCO, in partnership with the Centre for Intangible Cultural Heritage of Serbia and the Ethnographic Museum in Belgrade, and with the support of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Serbia.

The workshop aims to strengthen the role of museums as active stakeholders in the safeguarding of intangible cultural heritage, in line with the 2003 UNESCO Convention. Particular emphasis will be placed on inclusive and participatory approaches and community-based work with bearers of living heritage, as well as on the development of sustainable museum practices.

The programme combines theoretical sessions and practical modules. The workshop is intended for museum experts and cultural mediators working on the intersection of tangible and intangible cultural heritage. The participants will be introduced to the key principles and concepts of the Convention, explore and get inspired by good practices from the museum sector in Southeastern Europe and elsewhere and engage in interactive exercises. In the practical component, they will work on concrete case studies related to issues such as documentation of material culture and inventorying of living culture, museum programming and living heritage raising awareness and non-formal education and transmission of knowledge and skills in the view of living heritage safeguarding.

The training will provide an opportunity for the experience and knowledge exchange among professionals from the region, as well as for the development of ideas for integrating intangible cultural heritage into museum policies and practices. The activity will conclude with the presentation of group work results, evaluation of the training, the awarding of certificates, and a networking session. Ms. Panayiota Andrianopoulou and Ms. Tamara Nikolic-Deric, facilitators of the UNESCO global framework, will deliver the workshop.

The event is part of the activities of the Regional Centre for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage in South-Eastern Europe under the auspices of UNESCO to promote cooperation and capacity-building in the field of safeguarding intangible cultural heritage in South-Eastern Europe.
