To mark this important anniversary, the exhibition “Serbian Weddings 125 Years Ago,” by Tijana Čolak-Antić Popović, Museum Advisor, will open on 20 September. Through museum objects, traditional costumes, photographs, and other records, the exhibition presents the wedding as a major family, social, and ritual event.
Wedding customs bear witness to the values, relationships, and beliefs of a particular time. They brought families together, strengthened the community, and marked one of the most important transitions in life – the transition from one stage of life and family status to another. For this reason, the wedding offers a valuable insight into the everyday life, spiritual world, and cultural heritage of the Serbian people.
The story of the Ethnographic Museum in Belgrade is also a story about people – generations of curators, ethnologists, researchers, collaborators, and all those whose work has contributed to preserving testimonies of people’s lives, customs, and culture for future generations.
Throughout its long history, the Ethnographic Museum in Belgrade has been led by 20 directors. Their terms of office marked different periods in the Museum’s development, during which the institution itself, its role, and the ways in which it preserved, studied, and presented the cultural heritage of Serbia also evolved. Today, the Museum’s collections hold more than 120,000 museum objects, including more than 52,000 ethnographic objects that bear witness to the life, customs, beliefs, and culture of the people.
