The exhibition will be opened on February 12th at 7 pm in the small hall of the National Museum in Zrenjanin. The exhibition “Timor mortis: Fear of death” shows visitors the variety of attitudes towards death in folk traditions, trying to respond through their customs, rituals, social phenomena to temptations related to this eternal theme.
Along with items from the Serbian, Vlach and Mexican traditions, which are part of the collections of the Ethnographic Museum, visitors will be offered a variety of cultural and multidisciplinary content. Among the multitude of original and mystical objects, we would like to highlight the richly decorated talisman on a silver chain, the icon “The Last Judgment” with motifs of Jesus Christ, saints and devils snatching souls, as well as several tombstones. Part of the presentation is the interpretation of the media image of death and the media as a transmitter of messages related to death, which reveals the contemporary context in which we as a society have deconstructed and trivialized the fear of death in public speech.
During the duration of the exhibition, visitors will be able to see various historical and contemporary contents, photos and videos on the screens, in addition to the objects themselves. The exhibition was supported by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Serbia.
