The Ethnographic Museum in Belgrade will host the temporary exhibition “Extraordinary Textiles of Mexico” from May 23 to June 22, 2026. The exhibition is organized to commemorate the 80th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Mexico and Serbia, established on May 24, 1946, as well as during the year in which the Museum marks a significant jubilee — 125 years of existence and work.
The exhibition is organized in cooperation with the Embassy of Mexico in Serbia, which initiated and supported the presentation of this important exhibition to the Serbian public, with the aim of strengthening cultural ties and friendship between the two countries, while showcasing the richness of Mexican culture, traditions, and intangible heritage. A special contribution to the organization of the exhibition was made by His Excellency, Ambassador of Mexico to Serbia, Carlos Félix Corona, whose engagement represents an important incentive for cultural cooperation between Mexico and Serbia.
The exhibition is realized in cooperation with the Ethnographic Museum in Belgrade, the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Culture of Mexico and Serbia, as well as the Unit for Living Cultures, Intangible Heritage and Interculturality (UCUVI). It also forms part of the program marking the 125th anniversary of the Ethnographic Museum.
The exhibition features 34 sets of traditional costumes and two representative textile objects from the collection of the National Museum of Popular Cultures of Mexico. Visitors will have the opportunity to explore the textile traditions of sixteen Mexican states and the cultural heritage of numerous Indigenous peoples, including the Rarámuri, Comcaac, Wixárika, Purépecha, Otomi, Nahua, Triqui, Zapotec, Maya, and others.
The exhibition’s unique value lies in its handcrafted works, traditional embroidery, and textile techniques preserved for generations by Mexican communities, reflecting the strong connection between cultural identity, art, and everyday life.
