The exhibition “Serbian Wedding Traditions”, curated by Tijana Čolak-Antić Popović, Museum Advisor, explores one of the most significant moments in traditional life – the Serbian wedding.
Through museum objects, traditional costumes, photographs and other testimonies, the exhibition presents the wedding as an important family, social and ritual event. Wedding customs reflect the values, relationships and beliefs of a particular period, bringing families and communities together and marking one of the most important transitions in life – the transition from one stage of life and family status to another.
The exhibition takes visitors through different stages of the wedding ritual, from the proposal and wedding preparations, through the bride’s departure from her family home and the wedding ceremony itself, to her arrival at her new home. Wedding customs from the Pirot region, Kosovo and Metohija, Šumadija and Vojvodina are presented, highlighting the richness and diversity of traditional wedding practices.
The exhibition curator explains that her aim was to present different wedding customs from across Serbia during a period when the country was entering a process of modernization, while certain traditional forms of life were gradually changing and disappearing. Particular attention is given to changes in the appearance of the bride and the significance of traditional clothing.
Preserved objects, photographs and other testimonies allow the wedding to be viewed not only as a ritual, but also as a valuable window into the everyday life, spiritual world and cultural heritage of the Serbian people. In addition to original museum objects and photographs, the exhibition features interactive elements that allow visitors to explore wedding customs and the everyday life of past communities in a different way.
