Members of the Staparska ruža (Stapar Rose) Women’s Association from Stapar, near Sombor, will present the traditional technique of handweaving Stapar kilims, known as klečanje, on a horizontal loom. This craft skill has been practised for generations in the village of Stapar, in Bačka, northwestern Vojvodina, where it continues to be preserved and passed down as an important part of the local cultural heritage, primarily among women.
Visitors will have the opportunity to meet the weavers and learn about the fundamentals of this traditional technique, the use of a horizontal loom, and the process of making Stapar kilims. The programme will also include a practical demonstration of weaving skills.
The presentation is part of an ongoing series of activities initiated by the Centre for the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Serbia in cooperation with Manak’s House on the occasion of the International Day of the Intangible Cultural Heritage. These programmes aim to highlight the importance of cooperation between cultural heritage protection institutions and bearers of traditional knowledge and skills, as well as their indispensable role in safeguarding and transmitting intangible cultural heritage. Particular emphasis is placed on craft knowledge and production processes themselves, rather than exclusively on the objects created through their application.
Welcome!
