Filigree is one of the oldest and most refined techniques of working with precious metals, practiced by numerous civilizations since ancient times. This intricate craft has been used to create exquisite jewelry as well as decorative and functional objects of exceptional artistic value. Throughout the Balkans and Serbia, filigree has a long and distinguished tradition dating from the Middle Ages, through the Ottoman period, and continuing to the present day. It remains an important part of Serbia’s cultural heritage and goldsmithing tradition.
Mastering this demanding craft requires continuous, hands-on instruction from an experienced artisan. This year’s participants will be guided by Ivana Stanković, a visual artist, master filigree artisan, and long-time collaborator of Manak’s House. Through practical work, she will introduce participants to the fundamentals of the traditional filigree technique and lead them through the process of creating their own unique jewelry.
The workshop has been part of Manak’s House’s regular educational program since 2019. As one of the few continuous training programs dedicated to preserving the traditional art of filigree in Serbia, it plays an important role in passing this valuable craft on to future generations.
